Mr. Nakanishi investigates the breeding history of calves that are put up for auction, going back three generations. He studies the calves’ muscle quality, skeletal structure, their temperaments and health conditions. Because if he takes in calves that are restless or have aggresive tendencies, it might exert a bad influence on other cows. After moving the calves into his farm, Mr. Nakanishi pays every attention to hygiene in the cattle paddock. He checks whether the cows are eating well, the paddocks are adequately ventilated or whether his cows are getting along with each other. If he finds anything unusual, he never leaves it to chance and takes every appropriate measure, no matter how small the problem might appear to be. Mr. Nakanishi is so sensitive to these issues because even the slightest stress—the kind that people would not usually notice—might interfere with a healthy process of fattening. If any cow falls ill, he administers the appropriate medicines as well.
