▎Ramen name: Hazai and Toto, single choice
On my last night in the Sannomiya area of Kobe, I ended my four-night ramen late-night snack with Kobe beef ramen.
Hazawa Honten is a yakiniku specialty store, and the same brand has opened a ramen specialty store nearby that uses Kobe beef as its signature. The night I went there was a weekday night, and the store manager said that only Hazawa was a set meal that could be ordered. There was no other choice, so I had to eat like this. The whole set meal cost 1,800 yen, which is the most expensive ramen meal I have ever eaten in Japan. But considering that it is Kobe beef and a set meal, it is not that expensive.
The two Kobe steak sushi dishes were served first. To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between 80% and 90%. The steak was tender, juicy and thick, and the rice was firm, fragrant and elastic. When you bite down, you can cut the steak and rice at the same time. There is no need to bite hard and pull to cause the rice to fall apart.
The main dish of Kobe beef ramen is a salty beef bone white soup. The beef flavor is very strong. To be honest, I don’t like the strong beef flavor soup that much (I felt a bit inconsistent with the beef-related ramen from Kaohsiung First Flower Mountain and Tainan Rendo before).
The meat part should be thinly marinated Kobe beef short ribs? It's a pity that I can't ask the boss because I don't speak Japanese. It's tender and tasty without being too greasy.
Then we served Kobe Beef Tendon (stewed beef tendon?) and white rice. The taste was quite strong, so I paired it with white rice and finished it perfectly. Conclusion:
Appetizer sushi meat is soft and tender
The main course ramen is rich in beef flavor
Beef tendon cooked with savory flavor and served with rice
Overall, the taste is thicker, and customers with lighter tastes may feel greasy later on. It is not too salty, but the continuous heavy combo of wagyu fat → beef bone soup → beef tendon stew will be a bit overwhelming. Although this bowl of ramen is almost double the price of the usual ones, and although it is not to my personal taste, if you are a ramen fan visiting Kobe, eating a bowl of Kobe beef ramen is a reasonable experience.
