We went to their 4.9 rated sister restaurant down the road (Genkichi) that couldn’t seat 7 of us. They were kind enough to phone and check availability at this restaurant, then walk us here. We were excited as we researched the other restaurant and expected similar. It was 95 degrees outside, so we didn’t have time to keep walking around and thanked our luck. On a side note, we just came from Nagasaki where we were turned away from 7 restaurants in a row, so we were definitely getting the feeling of being profiled by all the nicer sit-down restaurants at this point. When we sat down, the prices here were so high that we begrudgingly spent over $1000 on their mid-priced cuts. We only live once and steak was the purpose of our day trip to Kobe, so we went ahead and ordered. We were extremely disappointed at the quality of the meat compared to other steak experiences we’ve had in Japan. I’ve eaten better ribeyes from Costco at home. What got us mad was when we left, there were popup signs outside for lunch specials - we could have fed everyone a similar meal for about $150 in total. When we asked about why that menu wasn’t presented to us we got “sold out” - but it was the same cuts of meat, miso soup, small salad and rice we just paid over $1000 for. Overall, the meal wasn’t bad if it was a $25 meal, the steak was served on plates so it got cold quick though. I recommend where you cook your own or they cook it for you so it’s hot when you eat it. Generally we are really angry for being completely tourist trapped.
